What is Health Coaching?

Health coaching is a newer profession, and not everyone is familiar with what a health coach does.  Sometimes it can be helpful to learn more about health coaching, to see if it’s a service that’s right for you.

What do Health Coaches Do?
  • Help you discover how to make healthy change fit into your life and last
  • Work with you to translate your goals into doable action steps
  • Provide support through the ups and downs of change
  • Are equipped with practical tools and resources
  • Are trained to use evidence based techniques

What Don’t Health Coaches Do?
  • Diagnose, treat, or prescribe (they are not doctors)
  • Treat mental health conditions (they are not therapists)
  • Tell you what to do (they are not your boss)
  • Use one size fits all formulas (change is unique to the person)

What might someone who could benefit from coaching say?
  • “I’d really like to get healthy, but I don’t know where to start”
  • “My doctor has asked me to change what I eat, and I’m feeling overwhelmed”
  • “I’m not sure what I’d like to change, but sometimes I worry about my health”
  • “My life is busy, and I can’t seem to make time for exercise”
  • “Changing my lifestyle feels difficult and I’d like some help”
