Health coaching really surprised me, but in a good way. I had never had anyone take the time to work through the challenges I was facing. It’s not that I didn’t want to lose weight, but food seemed expensive and I was a terrible cook. I felt trapped and didn’t know how to get out. Kristen had ideas that were affordable and she helped me begin to cook, one recipe at a time. I know my doctor supports me, but this was different. There is no way he’d have the time to go into all the detail I got into with her, things like what pots and pans I had in the cupboard. Adding a coach to my team was the secret sauce that propelled me into the healthier life I’m living now. I was skeptical at the beginning, but I’m so glad I tried it!

One thing that was new for me about health coaching, is that Kristen wasn’t bossing me around or shaming me. I arrived at my first session, bracing and waiting to hear a lecture about how I should get my cholesterol down and exercise more, but the lecture never came. I chuckle now thinking about how grumpy I looked that first day, showing up with my arms crossed and a frown on my face. Realizing I could change in ways that worked for me, on my own terms, without the guilt trip was transformative. It made me motivated to make those changes for me.

There is something about talking with someone experienced that really helps. Sometimes living with a chronic illness, I become a prisoner of my own thoughts. All the limitations can add up and I end up getting stuck. Having a voice other than my own is encouraging. Or realizing I have options like packing my own snacks to a wedding that won’t have food I can eat helps me enjoy myself instead of starving. Talking with Kristen has opened my mind up more to what’s possible.
